This is one of the rarest of the extra large German handmades I've ever had the privilege of owning: a single pontil cloud with lutz in green and blue glass. That's a mouthfull, but this marble is a handfull, literally and figuratively. At 1-5/8" it is a monster. Besides all that, it's probably one of the oldest marbles I have or have had. The type is one of the earliest made, circa 1850-1870.
The base glass is primarily green but there is a part of it that is blue as well, as the pictures show better than I can tell. There are white flecks near the surface continuing all throughout the interior marble, accompanied by a generous serving of spots and streaks of bright sparkling goldstone, or lutz. Sorry, but the lutz doesn't show up in the pictures as well as it should, but I guarantee there is plenty down inside the marble as well as the surface. There is but a single pontil mark that hasn't been ground on one end, fifth picture, and the other is smooth and blank with no marks at all, like an end of cane usually shows, sixth picture. Although you can see some of the spin marks, I am inclined to think that it is an end of cane rather than the single gather. I have some single gathers and the spin marks are usually a little more pronounced and a bit more horizontal than this one shows. There are also many traits that point to the style as that of a single gather. The first four pictures are of four quarter-turn rotations of the "sides" of the marble, and the last two are of the "ends".You may click here to view the grading system I use. CONDITION: MINT 9.6 The surface has the wet shiny look of a new untouched marble with no sign of wear of any kind. The only anomoly I can find is a slight protubance at the pontil end. | |||||
