Deep, almost blood, red and dark cobalt blue ribbons corkscew around a crystal clear base glass with the defining opaque white wispy striations to make one of the most sought after members of the Akro Agate POPEYE family. The so-call pre-Freeze eyelash-like marks are present at the poles indicating the marble was manufactured some time prior to April of 1922. And, at a bit over 11/16", this is one of the larger examples and would have been eligible as a shooter in the tournaments of the time.
CONDITION: MINT 9.3 The surface is wet and shiny with no sign of play or wear of any kind. The only anomoly I can find is a shallow fault line about 1/2" that runs parallel to the white wispy strands. You have to hold the marble under a bright light and lens and rotate it just right to find. Sorry, I couldn't get the pictures to pick it up. Also, there is a tiny melted dimple that you can see toward the top of the fourth and sixth pictures. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 17.83mm or 0.702" at the equator. | |||||
