Antique German Handmade:
1-19/32" PANELLED ONIONSKIN

Item# GM2498
For this listing:To better present all of the incredible features of this gorgeous relic of 19th-century glass art and the immaculate condition, there are ten instead of the usual six pictures per listing. The first two are of the pontail mark ends. The remaining eight are taken at 1/8th turn rotations.
CONDITION:
First Layer:
The base glass is transparent-clear with a yellow 'SKIN' covering the entire surface.
Second Layer: On top of the yellow are panels of spots and streaks. Two red-to-pink alternate with two green with some of the rare black interspersed with both.
Casing: In this instance, the entire marble Was then covered with a generous amount of clear-glass casing.
Age: With its ground and faceted pontail mark, the manufacture date of this marble can be traced to the first days of glass marbles in 1850. Then the practice was to grind the basal pontail mark. Twenty years later, in 1870, the practice was abandoned as too expensive.
CONDITION: NEAR MINT(++) Seldom have I seen better shine and presentation. What slight wear or damage is easily seen in the pictures, especially in the last four. I can only find a scratch, best seen near the center of the eighth picture.
I've seen a lot of so-called mint marbles that weren't anything near as nice as this one.
