ANTIQUE GERMAN HANDMADE:

MINT 1-47/64" CAGED LOBED TRIPLE RIBBON DIVIDED CORE SWIRL

Item# GM2527
DESCRIPTION: What a bright and colorful piece of eye candy from a glass master of at least 150 years ago. At first glance, I was looking at the marble from a pontail end. The ribbons are twisted to present lobes when viewed from that aspect. And give the illusion of a Lobed Solid Core Swirl. Of course, it didn't take long to realize my mistake when the side views came into play.
Three wide white ribbons with red and blue jelly stripes spiral from pole to pole in a most pleasing manner. The twelve equally spaced lattice lines at the surface are well designed and precisely executed. They effectively form an attractive cage around the entire inner core.
A profusion of tiny bubbles nearly fill the entire interior of the marble, but they are not as prominent as the pictures depict. However, the finish of the marble is every bit as bright and shiny as the pictures show.
The pontail marks: At one end, a faint pigtail is melted nearly to oblivion; at the other, the mark has been beautifully ground and faceted. This little bit of information tells us the manufacture date is between 1850 and approximately 1870, the earliest period in the history of glass marbles. Think of the care it took for a marble to survive that long and still be in such fantastic condition.
CONDITION: MINT(-) What an incredible shine! I cannot see that anything has afflicted the surface of this marble since leaving the factory. Remarkably, there are only a couple of melted dimples on the surface, considering the myriad of interior bubbles present. The reasoning for the mint-minus rating is for a short string of tiny surface bubbles with some nondescript debris melted in. The multitude of bubbles in the interior has thwarted my efforts to capture this almost insignificant anomaly.
